I found three useful methods, which you can use to import or export SharePoint Subsites.
Method 1: Import/Export SharePoint Subiste by using STSADM
The STSADM tool commands :
- Import Command: STSADM -0 Import
- Export Command: STSADM -o Export.
- Backup Entire Site Collections : STSADM -o Backup
- Restore Entire Collection: STSADM -o Restore
Let’s suppose you want to backup a books subsite at http://www.whsmith.co.uk/Books and restore it to a different site at http://www.sharepoint.inf4web.com/Books. You can use the following method to export the Books site from whsmith site and then restore it to the sharepoint.inf4web destination. If you want to keep the same permissions use the -includeusersecurity switch.
Run STSADM from its default location at C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Server Extensions14BIN.
To Export use following command at Command prompt. Open the Command Prompt on the SharePoint server as an administrator.
C:>stsadm -o export -url http://www.whsmith.co.uk/Books -filename WHBooksSiteBackup -includeusersecurity
You will see a single file called WHBooksSiteBackp.cmp that includes the exported content.
To import the subsite to a different site use the following syntax at the Command Prompt. Open the Command Prompt on the SharePoint server as an administrator.
C:>stsadm -o import -url http://www.sharepoint.inf4web.com/Books -filename WHBooksSiteBackup.cmp -includeusersecurity
Method 2: Import Export SharePoint Subsite Using Powershell
Run PowerShell as Administrator.
export-spweb -identity http://www.whsmith.co.uk/Books -path \serversharebackupWHBooksSiteBackup.cmp
import-spweb -identity http://www.sharepoint.inf4web.com/Books -path \serversharebackupWHBooksSiteBackup.cmp
To use import or export subsite command in power shall both source and destination template should be same.
I was receiving following error message:
“The exported site is based on the template STS#0 but the destination site is based on the template STS#1″
This means that a site based on the team template is trying to be imported into a site based on the blank template. To my knowledge (Google’s knowledge) there is no easy way of changing sites templates.
The following lists some of the common WSS templates:
Team Site— —————–STS#0
To overcome this problem, on destination site (http://www.sharepoint.inf4web.com) I just created new team site with the name of Books.
Now my destination address is identity http://www.sharepoint.inf4web.com/Books then i imported my sub site into this destination address and it was successfully imported because now source and destination site template are same (Team Site STS#0)
Method 3: ImportExport SharePoint Subsite Using Central Administration
Export using SharePoint Central Admin:
1. Select Backup and Restore
2. From the UI select Export a site or list
3. Select Site CollectionSite “leave list drop down clear” (in case you want export all subsites)
4. Optional categories is to export full security or export versioning history
Note: For import subsite through central admin there is no option available, for this purpose we have to use PowerShell command.
If anybody knows how to import subsite through central admin please send me message will update this post thanks
